Activity: Finding a Blog

Go to google.com/blogsearch and find a blog post that you like. Try to search for specific things to find recent posts… so instead of searching for “Carolina Basketball” maybe search for “Carolina Clemson” to find analysis of last night’s game. To find a more recent post click “last day” or “last week” on the left hand side of the page.

Look at a bunch of different posts and blogs and try to find one that you would consider returning to regularly. Once you have decided on a post, copy and paste the following questions into the comment window on this post and answer them with a sentence or two each:

Name:

1. What did you search for to find this post?
2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at?
3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader?
4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?
5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?

    1. What did you search for to find this post? Ballet

    2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at? I love Miami City Ballet's repertoire.

    3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader? The first post is a sort of look back at the year with one of the male dancers from the corps. A look back from any dancer point of view is enough of a hook to be interesting especially a dancer from the corps. They don't get out much.

    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating? It's very clean, so its more inviting than anything just because it isn't confusing to the person on the site.

    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you? The blogger conceives that you like dance. You don't have to necessarily know a lot about the ballet or all the terms or anything like that, though they are helpful. You would have to have classical training to know some of the ballet specifics, but that is true of me since I am a dance.

    1. What did you search for to find this post? Obesity
    2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at? I live in Georgia and this blog related obesity with the people in Georgia. It was interesting to see that Georgia is enacting a program to get the people outside and active.
    3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader? The post begins with an introduction to the program being initiated in Georgia. This hooks the reader if you're interested in bettering communities as a whole.
    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating? The blog layout is very simple and kind of plain. It's definitely not intimidating.
    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you? The blog is for a general audience. Basically anyone who can read would be able to understand what the blogger is trying to convey in the blog. The only assumptions the blogger is making is that people understand what it means to be obese and overweight.

    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating? The layout was inviting to help celebrate Dave's birthday.
    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you? Also, an outsider wouldn't know the song posted as one of his best hits produced if they don't follow the music of the band.I knew all of these things so it was easy for me to follow and understand.

    1) I searched for "vegetarian chili."
    2) The pictures on the blog were very enticing. Also, there were recipes for several different vegetarian dishes, not just one.
    3) The post begins with a greeting and then a statement about how the blogger wanted to introduce some items they have not posted in the past. I wanted to read their secret recipes! It is difficult to tell whether the hook is in the language or the pictures, but I was certainly interested in why the blogger decided to post these recipes now.
4)It is extremely inviting! The title is quirky. The photos are beautiful and the site is extremely easy to navigate.
    5) Given that this is a Vegan blog, it is probably a blog for insiders. Although anyone could prepare these recipes, it seems as though people who do not have a Vegan diet probably would not keep the ingredients necessary to cook these dishes. However, the dishes look scrumptious even for meat-eaters! The author assumes that the reader is Vegan. That is not true of me, but I do enjoy to cook Vegan dishes on occasion.

  6. 1. What did you search for to find this post?
    Ron Paul
    2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at?
It provided some interesting facts that will greatly effect the Republican Candidate race.
    3. What kind of introduction does the post have?
How does the writer try to hook his or her reader?
Romney and Paul: national candidates. The writer hooks the reader by having two major Republican candidates, who have very different views and stances, and puts their names in the same tittle. Readers can deduce that the writer has found a similarity between the two, which is odd for these two candidates.
    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?
It is inviting. Their a lot of videos to grab the eye.
    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?
The reader writes for everyone. There is no bashing; there is only facts about future events in the Republican race. The writer probably assumes the reader has some knowledge in the current race, but it is not needed to understand his post.

The website was allthingslawandorder so I assumed it would have a lot of information.
    3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader?
There is a nice display of pictures from the series and the writer claims that the website has everything there is to know about every Law and Order show.
    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?
I think it is very inviting, posts are organized by date and easily accessible. An archive is available if you are looking for older information.
    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?
Everyone who likes Law and Order is the audience, so the author assumes that the audience watches the show although perhaps not regularly. That is true with me, I watch this show whenever possible. This blog can be for insiders who watch the show or outsiders who have questions.

    1. Alaska tour northern lights
    2. The author writes about her personal experience in Alaska Tour, which interests me more than normal travel ads.
    3. No specific introduction. She uses pictures, which makes the post more convincing, to hook the readers
    4. The page seems inviting, and friendly.
    5. I think the blogger just talks about her day-tour in Alaska, the traveling experience is definitely for outsiders, in case there is no professional knowledge involved in this post. Thus, she does not need the audience to have any knowledge, she just wants them to read her experience in Alaska, that's it, very simple.

    1. I googled not that you asked sports after coming up empty handed when I googled Carolina vs. Miami.
    2. I chose this post because was more recent (posted on January 10, 2012), it includes in-depth analysis of the top teams in college basketball, and it was written by a UNC student.
    3. The post has a very short introduction. The introduction simply states that this basketball season has had its ups and downs but the best is yet to come. The real hook comes later in the introduction paragraph when the author writes, "we have had the chance to take a look back at the preseason top 10 and top 25 and see who surprised us and who disappointed us.
    4. The blog's layout is very inviting since it gives readers the chance to vote on polls along the side bar and each post ends with the sign off "stay classy"

This blog relies heavily on reality tv lovers. With that in mind, this blog is for those who are interested in the lives of reality tv stars including Kim Kardashian.

    1. What did you search for to find this post? I already read this blog semi-regularly. I found it on facebook. One of my friends (and by friend I mean someone I met twice) does a blog about herself and her awkward life.
    2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at? It is really funny and relatable. My life is weird and awkward too, and it makes me feel better knowing someone else is out there like me.
    3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader? He tagline is “A hopelessly klutzy and tactless twentysomething bumbling through life” which draws me in immediately. Her official introduction is short and to the point: “You can find me with a chai latte in one hand and a script in the other.” I also know she is a drama major, which I am too.
    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating? I like the blog’s layout. It is simple without being boring. I am glad that it isn’t one of those blogs where there is so much color that your eyes can stay in the same place for too long.
    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you? I think this blog is mostly for insiders, but that includes many people. It is for people who have had those awkward moments in life. She assumes most people have had these experiences and I agree. Her blog is also there to entertain.

    3. The writer starts off by telling readers what an incredible place Spain is to visit.
    4. It’s kind of intimidating. It’s a little unorganized and not very colorful. Posts are kind of squished together instead of easy to read and inviting.
    5. The blogger wants to inform outsiders about travel. He’s visited Spain and wants to convince others who don’t know as much to visit as well.
